An accident at a West End gas station Sunday morning has left one dead. A man driving a 2006 Ford F150 pickup truck eastbound down Patterson Avenue near its intersection with Pump Road crossed a median and flipped his vehicle into a gas station in the 10400 block of Patterson.

The driver, identified as 44-year-old John Darin Hollins, suffered fatal injuries when his truck landed upside down and hit a gas pump, according to Henrico Police officials.

An employee inside the gas station’s convenience store acted quickly to shut the pumps off, possibly preventing an explosion.

A portion of Patterson Avenue was closed for approximately an hour while officials investigated the accident.

There’s no word yet on the cause of the accident or external factors contributing to the severity of the crash.
