Far West End Swim Team First in Donations in Drive to Feed 17,000 Needy Central Virginians

A local food-and-funds drive called Dunk Hunger, sponsored by Richmond Family Magazine and the Virginia Swim Shop, netted more than 2,500 pounds of food for the Central Virginia Food Bank, not to mention $3,020 in cash and sponsor donations—the equivalent of 17,634 meals for hungry neighbors.

Ten area swim teams and pool clubs competed between June 1st and July 31s  in this summer’s Race Against Hunger. A Short Pump area pool netted the most donations as part of the drive.

The Wyndham Tidal Waves won with a donation of 1,628 meal equivalents, followed closely by Canterbury Recreation Association/Swim Team with 1,623 meal equivalents. Other regional participants included Walton Park Community Association, Inc., Hungary Creek Recreation Association, Mechanicsville Recreation Association, Hampton Park Hammerheads, Church Run Rocketts, Glen Allen Pool, Weinstein JCC Dolphins, and Beulah Swim Team.

Dunk Hunger’s finale celebration and check presentation is scheduled Wed., Aug. 29, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Wyndham Pool, 6401 OId Wyndham Dr. in Glen Allen. Media is invited for interviews and photo ops of the winners and sponsors.
