Short Pump is the name given to to describe the Far West End of Henrico County, Virginia. The area can be loosely defined as being bounded by Nuckols Road in the north, Ridgefield Parkway in the south, Cox Road in the east, and Route 288 in the west. Short Pump is inarguably the hottest area for commercial development right now in the metropolitan Richmond region, and is home to a huge open-air regional mall plus a dozen other high end shopping centers featuring some of Richmond’s premiere specialty shops and gourmet restaurants.
Short Pump was a quiet country crossroads with almost no commercial development whatsoever up until 1996, when West Broad Street was widened from two to six lanes(for an extensive history of the Short Pump area, click here). After that point, the development rate exploded. The area was destined to become a commercial success because of its convenient location, adjacent to such major arteries as West Broad Street, Interstates 64 and 295, and Route 288.
